Whole Wheat and Flaxseed Fried Bake
Since we've already established my love for these golden discs of dough, I think it goes without saying that I eat them on a regular basis. It's always my intent though, to try my best to add some healthy element to my favorite food and while it's still fried and not necessarily the healthiest thing, it does help somewhat to throw in some wheat and grains and boost the nutritional value. Still surprisingly soft and light and tasty, these were a hit with my entire family so I'm sharing the recipe with you and I do hope you enjoy.
3 1/3 cups All Purpose Flour
2/3 cups Whole Wheat Flour
3 tsp Baking Powder
2 tsp Instant Yeast
2 tbsp Brown Sugar
2/8 cup Flax Seed
1/4 tsp Salt
3 tbsp Butter/Margarine
1 1/3 warm Water
●In a large mixing bowl add flour, whole wheat flour, yeast, baking powder, salt, flax seed, brown sugar and mix.
●Add butter/margarine and using hands rub into flour until properly incorporated.
●Gradually add water slowly until flour is binded but not very sticky. Knead for 2 mins and then roll into a ball and set aside in bowl covered with towel. Let flour rest for 15-20 mins.
●Using a frying pan or skillet add oil on high heat. On a floured surface divide dough into 10 balls and begin rolling dough out into circular shape.
●Ensure oil is hot by testing a small piece of dough if it immediately begins to sizzle and rise the oil is hot enough to add large piece of dough.
Note: A great way to get dough to puff up gently spoon hot oil over dough repeatedly when you first place it in the pan and it will gradually puff up.
●When dough is golden on one side flip and fry the other, when both sides are golden remove from heat and place in a bowl with grease proof paper or paper towels to absorb the oil from the baked.
Serve hot with butter, margarine, cheese, buljol, smoked herring or any desired filling or have if you're like me with no additions hot and crispy because this type of bake is just that good.
